Palliative and end-of-life care supports and services can be a crucial part of the caregiver journey. Services such as hospice, pastoral care, social work, support groups are just a few of the services that can be accessed.

A Caregiver's Perspective

I provided care for my dad for 10 years, although I knew we would eventually get to the point that I would need to deal with palliation or end-of-life care, it all happened so quickly and I didn’t feel prepared. When my dad’s health changed dramatically I was faced with many decisions that I hadn’t previously discussed with him. I was thankful for the support of my family doctor, family health team and my community service coordinator who helped me navigate this time. With their support I was able to keep my dad at home, where he wanted to be until the end. Looking back, I wish I would have broached this topic with my healthcare team and Dad earlier.

Tips for Caregivers by Caregivers

• Access pastoral care while in the hospital or from your community church. Pastoral care can provide support and advice during this time; this support can be non-spiritual.

• Ask your healthcare provider for social work support.

• Consider hospice services – The goal of hospice services help people who are dying have peace, comfort and dignity while allowing their loved ones a chance to spend quality time as family.

• Be comfortable in your own personal choices – at end of life your care recipient may want to stay in hospital, go to hospice or be at home – you have a right to advocate for either of these options.

• Advanced planning with funeral homes can provide relief in the days after or leading up to end of life. Don’t hesitate to contact them with any questions you may have.
